Work to pedestrianise a closed Kenilworth town centre road have stalled.

Having been closed since 2020, the end of Station Road has now been blocked off fully, with the pavement along Warwick Road continuing right across the disused turning.

The temporary pocket park has also been removed, with permanent planters and benches currently being installed.

However, Warwickshire County Council's works on Station Road have stalled, with residents seeing little progress over the past few weeks.

Explaining the delays, Cllr Rik Spencer told Nub News: "The delay is with the laying of the aggregate which will cover the old tarmac.

"We need a couple of days of warmer weather (+8C).

"There was also a question mark as to whether or not we could create the tree pits as officers weren't 100 per cent sure what they would find until they started digging…the good news is that we have the tree pits in place.

"However we won't have the trees installed until the end of March due to other commitments."

Residents have also questioned why one of the benches appears to have been installed in front of a dropped kerb. However, Cllr Spencer explained this is actually a drain to prevent any flooding at the neighbouring estate agents.

The pavement has been designed to slope away from the side door to an alco drain.

Works to date have seen new traffic bollards installed to mark out the closed section and redundant signs removed.

The old road markings will be removed.

Station Road first closed in 2020 as a temporary measure during the Covid-19 pandemic to allow better social distancing by preventing pedestrians crowding near the junction with Warwick Road.

Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) then requested the closure become permanent.

A consultation was launched through Warwickshire County Council and the closure was signed off in 2023

KTC then used funding through the EU's 'Welcome Back' scheme to install the current 'beautiful benches' and planters along the road as a temporary solution to improve the aesthetics of the road.

Station Road has also been identified as a key issue for improving accessibility for disabled people in Kenilworth by KTC.

A completion date for the whole project is yet to be confirmed.
