A final decision on whether to install speed bumps and extend a 30mph speed limit along Warwick Road in Kenilworth is expected this week.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has already held a public consultation on the scheme, which was set in motion by Kenilworth Town Council.

If approved, the project would also see the 30mph speed limit extended 230 metres down the road, past Wilkshire Road and the Pavilions housing estate - this as well as up to eight new sets of speed bumps and street lighting.

Locals were consulted on the project earlier this year, with over 200 replies being sent back to WCC - just seven objections were received.

Concerns raised included the number of speed humps, the cost and calls for a roundabout or traffic lights at the junction with Rouncil Lane.

However, a council report due to be discussed this Friday (December 8) said the latter would be "significantly" more expensive than was agreed with the developer under the section 278 agreement.

The cost for the works is also expected to be met by developer Bovis Homes, the firm behind the Pavilions housing estate.

"Residents who live on the Warwick Road, between St Johns Gyratory and the Cricket Club entrance, have long suffered vehicles traveling above the 30MPH speed limit on this section of road," the council report explained.

It added: "Residents on the New Development at the Pavilions feel cut off from the town as there is a lack of street lighting on Warwick Road, the cycle paths designed and built into the development don’t connect to any other cycle paths outside of said development and hence do not encourage residents to cycle into Kenilworth Town Centre.

"Clearly, the speed of motorists entering and leaving Kenilworth on the Warwick Road creates a negative connotation of danger which is not conducive to healthy living or wellbeing."

The Warwick Road project follows a petition submitted to WCC by local residents calling on members to "see sense" and move the 30mph speed limit past the entrance to the estate.
