Kenilworth Lido Campaign group is set to deliver nearly 130 festive themed postcards to the Warwick District Councillor overseeing the redevelopment of the Abbey Fields swimming pool.

Cllr Liam Bartlett, WDC portfolio holder for culture, tourism and leisure, will receive the postcards gathered from members of the public during the campaign's 'Christmas Wish for Outdoor Swimming' initiative which has run over the last two Saturday mornings in Talisman Square.

The group hopes that Cllr Bartlett takes time to read the cards and notes the strength of feeling in Kenilworth before the bulldozers are allowed to move in and demolish the current leisure centre.

A spokesperson said the group was "delighted with the response" from residents who have set out "why they firmly firmly believe that the outdoor pool in Abbey Fields should not be demolished".

"Most comments left related to the health and tourism benefits that such a facility should bring and disbelief that WDC is prepared to sacrifice what should be one of the town's top two attractions."

The initiative culminated last Saturday with a procession from Talisman Square to the Abbey Fields pool complex and back, gathering more completed cards on the way.

The spokesperson added: "Members of the public expressed their support of the action taken on the day that the pool finally closed and indeed some motorists sounded their horns in return for a wave."

The campaign group said it will continue to fight for a safe outdoor swimming facility alongside the indoor pool in Abbey Fields.

"If after over 125 years the outdoor pool is lost, particularly at a time when there has been a resurgence of lidos in the UK, and the health benefits of swimming outside are more widely understood, we believe history will not look favourably on this council," added the spokesperson.

"It is not too late to let your feelings be known as copies of the postcard can be picked up from and left completed at Kenilworth Books in the run up to Christmas and the New Year."
