Government's credibility asking for more Covid restrictions 'damaged' by recent events says Kenilworth MP

By James Smith 23rd Dec 2021

The government's credibility when asking for stricter Covid-19 restrictions has been "damaged" by recent events according to Kenilworth's MP.

Opposition parties have called for an independent inquiry into Downing Street parties from Christmas 2020.

And as more details emerged this week of a gathering at No. 10 in May 2020 - when strict mixing restrictions were in place - MP for Kenilworth and Southam Jeremy Wright said it was harder for people to accept more restrictions.

"Frankly it would be better if recent events had not damaged the government's credibility in asking us to accept further restrictions," he said.

Despite this Mr Wright was not among the 97 Tory MPs that voted against the 'plan B' measures in parliament last week, and instead followed the party line to approve them.

The new rules include the return of mandatory face coverings to most indoor venues, the introduction of Covid passes to large venues and mandatory vaccinations for NHS workers.

Mr Wright said the new measures were "sensible and proportionate" but added that they would be reviewed again in the new year.

"I am not in favour of compulsory vaccination for the general population, but I do think exceptions should be made for those who are employed to look after those most likely to be vulnerable to the virus," he said.

Adding: "In the case of this proposal for extended mask wearing, inconvenient as it is, I think it is a sensible measure to take."

Mr Wright's full statement can be read online here.
