More investment needed to fix potholes and Kenilworth's 'crumbling roads' says councillor
Town councillors have unanimously backed a call to their county colleagues to address the condition of Kenilworth's "crumbling" roads.
Speaking at the most recent Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) meeting, Cllr Richard Dickson said there is an urgent need to improve road surfaces across the town.
The Liberal Democrat councillor said the most common complaints he receives from residents are about potholes, roadworks and road safety.
And with more houses and more developments being built across the town, Cllr Dickson said now is the time to act.
"Members, we know - do we not - that right now Kenilworth is a changing town. Hundreds of new properties being built. A new secondary school, new leisure centre facilities. But where is the investment in our roads?" he said.
"It's like we are getting a new heart, new lungs and new kidneys but our blood vessels - the means by which everything is connected, the means by which everything gets around - are still shot to pieces."
Councillors voted in favour of writing to Warwickshire County Council (WCC) - which is responsible for roads across the town - to explain the "apparent under-resourcing of repairs" and what is being done to source funding.
WCC will also be asked how the £2.87 million grant it received for pothole repairs earlier this year will be spent in Kenilworth.
And the local authority will be called on to explain how it plans to "minimise the ongoing impact of new works on safety and traffic flow".
"We need to be realistic that our roads won't change overnight," Cllr Dickson added.
"And we need to be practical too.
"On behalf of our residents and the visitors to Kenilworth I think we need to be working much more closely with the county council to find a better way of maintaining our roads."
