A local resident's bid to name a street in Kenilworth after Colin the white wallaby has been voted down by town councillors.
The unnamed resident had asked Kenilworth Town Council and Warwick District Council to consider renaming part of Rouncil Lane - where the marsupial was regularly spotted by locals - 'White Wallaby Lane' in his memory.
Colin, who became something of a local social media celebrity, was put down by vets last October after being hit by a van.
Councillors were advised it would make more sense for the name to be used for a new road on one of the estates currently under construction along Glasshouse Lane.
But the town council had already sent a list of potential names to its district colleagues for the new developments, and decided it was not appropriate to add Colin's to the list.
"I think Colin only resided here for a very short time, and while he was extremely popular when anybody saw him, I'm not sure he has the residents' qualification, quite frankly," Cllr Michael Coker said at last week's meeting.
Cllr Alison Firth added: "We did spend quite a lot of time creating the themes, which we did agree at a town council meeting.
"It took a long time thinking about it, and although Colin was ace he did only exist here for a short time and there are many more residents who lived here a lot longer and done much more for the town."
Following weeks of work between councillors and local historians, 12 different themes for street names were put forward to the district council.
These included lost businesses, local heroes and even varieties of tomato.
Cllr Alix Dearing advised members that the final list has been approved by WDC, but is yet to be made public.
None of the councillors voted in favour of naming a road after Colin.
