Warwick District Council looks set to commission a £206,000 report into the land north and east of Kenilworth.

The 'Masterplanning Framework', which will not look at the town itself, will investigate the development needs of the area.

The impact of HS2, new housing, expansion at the University of Warwick and the new gigafactory will all be included.

Whilst the report will be separate from the new South Warwickshire Local Plan, the council said the two would feed into each other.

WDC's cabinet will discuss the scope of the masterplan on Thursday before it is given the green light.

A report set to be discussed said the masterplan would help the council: "Understand and consider the significant opportunities as well as challenges in the area.

"This will include how improvement and linkages can be made to green infrastructure across the area and how more robust business cases for projects and proposals which local authorities are seeking to deliver (particularly in terms of infrastructure) can be developed."

WDC said the £206,000 would cover the costs of a new 'site delivery officer' for two years as well as the technical surveys needed.

Warwickshire County Council, Coventry City Council and the University of Warwick have all agreed to be involved in the plans and could contribute up to £50,000 each.

Green Party support

Local Green councillors have already welcomed the masterplan as they hope it will trigger a rethink about the A46 Strategic Link Road.

A motion led by Cllr James Kennedy last year calling for WDC to reconsider its position on the road received unanimous support from the council, but was rejected by cabinet.

Cllr Kennedy said the masterplan gave fresh hope.

"I am delighted that Warwick District Council has now seen sense and is pushing other organisations to reconsider travel and transport improvements in the area, which should prioritise active and sustainable travel in line with government policy," he said.
