Alcohol licence granted for new street food eatery in Kenilworth
Councillors have granted permission for a new street food eatery in Kenilworth to serve alcohol, despite raising concerns about the business' opening hours.
Albion Street Kitchen opened in September - following a £100,000 investment - and has already proved very popular with locals.
And now the Albion Street business can add alcohol to already expansive menu of cuisines from around the globe.
Speaking at Warwick District Council's (WDC) licensing committee meeting yesterday (October 24), business owner Joseph Rayappan explained that serving alcohol would not cause disruption to locals.
"I would like to have a premises licence to give a nice experience," the twice general manager of the year said.
"It is not a pub; there will be no live entertainment or big parties.
"It is only a 30 cover restaurant and we have only 10 covers outside seating.
"The idea is people will have one or two drinks during a meal."
Prior comments from WDC environmental health and Warwickshire County Council's trading standards were withdrawn before the hearing, after Mr Rayappan agreed to a number of conditions for the licence.
One member of the public also objected to the application.
Meanwhile councillors at the hearing questioned why the business had applied to serve alcohol from 10am.
Cllr Pam Redford said: "I am still concerned. What have you done to investigate how many customers at 10am in the morning are going to require alcohol?
"This is a residential area, in a reasonably quiet town and I don't see myself that you are going to have queues out the door for alcohol at 10am.
"For me that seems a little bit unnecessary to have a licence from that time."
However, the panel agreed to grant the alcohol licence.
