Covid-19 vaccination booster clinic at Warwick Hospital closes after four weeks

By James Smith 20th Jan 2022

A Covid-19 vaccination booster hub at Warwick Hospital has closed after just 26 days as nearly 90,000 people in Warwick district have received a booster jab.

The hub, which was planned as a temporary measure, was opened after the Prime Minister gave the NHS the target of offering boosters to everyone who wants one by the end of the December.

The push, which also saw Stoneleigh vaccination clinic offer more appointments, saw nearly 35,000 people in Warwick district aged 12 or above receive a third jab in December alone.

But NHS South Warwickshire Foundation Trust said the hub could be re-established if there was future demand for it.

Whilst the booster hub at Warwick Hospital closed on Friday, January 14, local health bosses are urging Warwickshire residents to get vaccinated if they haven't already.

"It's vital to get your booster when you are eligible – three months after your second dose – to boost your immunity this winter and help the NHS," said Dr Sarah Raistrick, clinical chair of Coventry and Warwickshire CCG.

"Covid-19 has not gone away and the new variant, Omicron, is rapidly spreading in the community. There is a misconception that symptoms of Omicron are mild for everyone, but they can be extremely serious for some people, particularly those who are not vaccinated.

"Two jabs aren't enough to protect from Omicron but a booster really does its job in boosting immunity to offer a good level of protection. Studies have shown that it reduces the risk of symptomatic disease from the Omicron variant by up to 75 per cent."

And with Covid-19 infection rates still high in south Warwickshire, the hospital has also suspended patient visiting, except in a number of special circumstances.
