Detailed plans to build an athletes village at the University of Warwick for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have been revealed.
The university announced in August 2020 that it had been chosen to house nearly 2,000 athletes during the games this July, but a detailed planning application has now been submitted to Warwick District Council.
Whilst athletes will be roomed in student accommodation, a temporary gym, clinic, screens from the public, security fencing and two recreational buildings will also be built on the campus.
The 1.8 hectare village will only be in place for 28 days
The university was chosen to support the games after £500million plans to create a purpose built athletes village in Birmingham were pulled.
Instead, the campus will host competitors alongside two other athletes villages, at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel and the University of Birmingham.
The athletes village at Warwick will be built this July, as Coventry and Warwickshire gets ready to host rugby sevens, judo, wrestling, lawn bowls, para bowls and cycling road race events.
"The University of Warwick is ideally equipped to welcome athletes from all over the Commonwealth to come as the prepare to train and compete in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham," said Lisa Dodd-Mayne, director of sport and active communities.
"We have a fantastic array of sports facilities. We also have fantastic accommodation and conference facilities, so the athletes can make sure they are refreshed and prepared for when they want to train.
"We know that when athletes come to the Commonwealth Games they need to be prepared and ready, they need to have everything in one place and it is our job to make things as easy as possible for them to be ready to compete."
