'Don't judge the PM until you have all the facts' says district council leader

The leader of Warwick District Council has refused to pass sentence on Boris Johnson's future until he has "heard all the facts".

Mr Johnson has faced calls to resign after he apologised during Prime Ministers Questions on Wednesday (January 12) for attending a drinks party at Downing Street in May 2020.

Politicians are now waiting on an enquiry report from Sue Gray into apparent rule breaking at No.10.

But Conservative Councillor Andrew Day said he was focusing on "doing what people need us to do" in Warwick district rather than worrying about what is happening at Westminster.

And the Bishop's Tachbrook councillor said it was "fair and proper" to wait for all the facts to be published before making a final judgement on the PM.

Speaking on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire's breakfast show Cllr Day said as yet there was no need for a Conservative leadership election.

"I am not in Westminster, so as far as I am concerned, it is a great time to be a Tory because we are collecting our waste in Warwick district, cracking on with planning processes and doing what people need us to do," he said.

"Perceptions are not good for the prime minister at the moment, that I accept.

"Lets remember what makes this country great, and that is a fair and proper process. That is why this country is held up around the world – so I am not rushing to judgement just yet."

Leader of the opposition Sir Kier Starmer has joined a number of senior Tory politicians in calling for Mr Johnson's resignation.

The PM has urged MPs not to pass judgement until Sue Gray's report is published, which could be as early as next week.

Like Cllr Day, Kenilworth and Southam MP Jeremy Wright has done just that, saying he too would make a decision once all the facts are published.

Cllr Day added: "We have got to wait and hear what this report has got to say. It is very easy and very quick for Kier Starmer to rush in and be judge and jury.

"He has got the boot in, he has done what you would expect him to do – but I want to hear the facts, I want to know exactly what happened before I reach any judgement and that is the same not just with members within the party, but also with many fair minded people across Britain.

"I am not defending anyone – I am refusing to judge the prime minister until I have the facts, and I am asking other people to do the same."
