Toby Wells scored his second consecutive hat-trick as Kenilworth Wardens beat Southam Sporting to continue their unbeaten streak in the Tracey Thomas Sunday League Division Four.

Wells' second hat-trick in as many games puts him on 18 goals for the season as Wardens sit second in the division, eight points adrift of leaders Cubbington but with three games in hand.

And despite the routine 3-0 victory for the hosts manager Paddy Breslin praised Southam's shrewd defence.

"Southam's league position surprises me because, whilst we limited their chances, they were defensively sound," he said.

With the experience of James Butcher and Tom Andrews brought in for the game, Wardens started the game well and dominated from the whistle.

After just 20 minutes the hosts found the breakthrough. Butcher played a long pass for Josh Loan-Clarke, who outran the full back and beat the keeper to the ball, unselfishly squaring it to Wells to pass home.

Wardens continued to be on top and went close to doubling their advantage when Kevin Greenhill's free kick was turned around for a corner by the Southam keeper.

At half time Wardens made changes which disrupted their flow and let Southam back into the game.

Shot stopper Eddie Morris was called into action for the first time on 55 minutes as he saved a well hit free kick to preserve Kenilworth's advantage.

On 60 minutes Breslin moved Toby Wells to the right hand side which had an immediate impact.

Wells picked up a loose ball and beat two players before striking the ball into the corner of the goal for his second of the game.

Wardens continued to dominate the ball and restricted Southam to no chances.

With five minutes left, Wells got his hat-trick. A Tom Holmes ball forward was flicked on by Harry Morris and controlled by Wells.

The youngster then beat two players and hit the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out, leaving the keeper with no chance.

The hosts saw the game out to take just their second clean sheet of the season and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Breslin added: "We are improving as a side and the clean sheet is very satisfying indeed."
