A hat-trick from Guy Pearson helped Kenilworth Wardens complete a league double over Christ the King Reserves as they hit the Coventry side for six at Gypsy Lane.

Dan Twigger's brace and a late goal from captain Sam Taylor saw Kenilworth complete a dominant display and keep their promotion hopes alive.

Kenilworth have now scored 11 goals against Christ the King this season, leaving manager Eamonn Richards praising the depth in his squad.

"We're in a really good position as a club and a team, I've got a really great bunch of lads, who are experienced, really good footballers and most importantly and really intelligent on the pitch," he said.

"But without the subs - Dan Twigger and Louie Beck - we may not have won today, no one likes being on the bench but those two were absolutely fantastic when they came on."

Christ the King started the game strongly, pressing high and disrupting Wardens' usual flow of passing, but not managing to break through a stalwart Kenilworth defence.

Despite starting second best, it was the hosts who made the breakthrough on 30 minutes.

A long throw in from Tom Shanley was flicked on by Andy Legg to an unmarked Pearson 6 years out. His first tame shot was saved by the keeper, but the rebound fell at his feet and he poked it away.

The goal deflated Christ the King whilst relaxing Wardens, meaning they began to dominate the ball.

Wardens nearly went 2-0 up when a one-two with Richards and Pearson released Pearson down the left. His cross was half cleared to Phil Rudd who chipped the keeper but was denied by the crossbar.

At half time both team made changes. Christ the King changed their system from a high press 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 and Wardens changed personnel with Dan Twigger coming in.

From the restart Twigger consistently found himself isolating the left centre half, and he continued to get in behind the Christ the King defence only for his crossing to let him down.

With the game still in the balance, a forward pass from Richards was controlled by Legg, who played a cutting ball to the onrushing Twigger, who calmly slotted below the keeper to make it 2-0.

The linesman had flagged for offside, but since Twigger clearly ran past his man, the referee rightly overturned the decision.

Twigger was involved again minutes later. When a promising Wardens move broke down, the Christ the King keeper took too long over his clearance which was blocked by Twigger. The ball fell to Pearson who calmly chipped the hapless keeper to make his second and Wardens' third.

Louie Beck was then introduced soon after and his energy meant Wardens controlled the ball and won it back high up the pitch.

On 70 minutes Beck read and intercepted a long ball inside the King's half, played in Pearson who played a cute one-two with Legg.

Pearson then shaped to go across the goal but passed it at the near post for his 50th Kenilworth goal in almost as many games.

On 80 minutes Beck was once again involved, mopping up the play he started a move between five wardens players, with the ball going to Rudd. Rudd played a one-two with Twigger, releasing Twigger behind, who once again calmly passed under the keeper for his second of the game.

Wardens continued to be ruthless and bagged a sixth just before the full time whistle.

Pearson found himself in a good position 8 yards out, but before he could get his shot away was tackled, Twigger reacted quickly from the byline and his cross-come-shot was turned in by Taylor who was the only player to react.

And with a second consecutive clean sheet, Richards was satisfied by a solid team performance.

"The first 20 or 30 minutes were difficult today," he added.

"Once we scored we settled and it became a relatively comfortable match where we controlled play.

"But throughout the 90 the back five were perfect - second clean sheet in a row for Andy Whitehouse and the defence and well deserved. Butler and Griffith were especially brilliant at the back today."

Elsewhere Kenilworth Wardens Reserves lost 9-3 to unbeaten Kenilworth Sporting Reserves. Goals from Charlie Waters, James Butcher and debutant Alex Nwafor.

But Reserve team manger Adam Maltby still saw positives in the result.

"I was though delighted with the quality again of our play at times and our goals again were excellent," he said.

"Despite the scoreline I feel Sporting will know they've been in a game today. We'll take the positives from today and move on to Folly Lane next week and hopefully get a positive result."
