Kenilworth Wardens winning start to the season came to an end as table toppers RS Sports ran out 3-1 winners, maintaining their own 100 per cent start to the season.

Wardens started the better side, keeping possession well and creating several early opportunities which weren't taken.

However, due to RS Sports' high press, Wardens started to become sloppy in possession with keeper Andy Whitehouse to thank for a couple of smart saves after defensive errors.

Wardens were ultimately punished on the 30 minute mark after giving the ball away inside their own half. RS Sports countered quickly before their number nine rifled the ball into the top corner.

Wardens then had a further blow after 35 minutes when player-manager Eamonn Richards had to leave the game due to his wife going into labour.

Kenilworth quickly lost their shape and RS Sports managed to score twice more before the half time whistle.

In Richards' absence, Whitehouse led the team talk calling the side to play quicker and on the front foot.

His words clearly took effect as Wardens pulled a goal back early in the second half when Dan Twigger was played in to slot between the goalkeeper's legs.

Wardens continued to push for a second goal and a way back into the game, but a string of brilliant saves from the RS Sports keeper kept the score at 3-1.

Speaking after the game Richards praised his team's spirit and commitment.

"I am glad that we rallied and showed our character in the second half," he said.

"I actually thought we were better in the opening 25 minutes, however we need to be more clinical in the opposition box and keep possession of the ball better in the first two thirds of the pitch."

Despite the loss Wardens still sit second in the Coventry Alliance Division One, having just been promoted. They will travel to play AFC Coventry next weekend with Richards still confident in the strength and depth of his squad.

He added: "We're still trying to find our best 11 but I'm happy with the quality and depth of our team this year and feel that we can match RS Sports when we play them at home later in the season."
