A late goal for GNP Sports ended Kenilworth Wardens Reserves' perfect start to the season as the hosts struggled to create chances throughout.

Despite dominating the ball for much of the game Wardens failed to take advantage of their dominance and conceded five minutes from time for their first defeat of the season.

On 15 minutes and in quick succession brothers Tom and Ryan Hoey both got into good areas just outside the box however neither really testing the keeper who dealt with both with relative ease.

Alex Waters also got forward just after down the left and cut inside again only to shoot high and wide of the goal.

The hosts came close on the stroke of half time when GNP just scrambled a Wardens corner off the line to safety.

The second half continued much the same with Wardens seeing plenty of the ball without really creating any chances.

But on 75 minutes the best chance of the game fell to Adam Hnat whose shot across goal went just wide of the post.

With five minutes to go a short Wardens free kick just inside the opposition half was read and well challenged by a GNP midfielder who broke forward and played in the striker to lift the ball over the onrushing Tate in goal.

With two minutes left a Ward header from a corner was again hacked off the line and GNP held on for an unlikely win.

Following the result manager Adam Maltby said: "It's the classic smash and grab from them, and fair play to them.

"When it goes against you it's absolutely gutting but when you get them it's great - obviously it's gone against us today and it hurts, the lads are gutted and it was a quiet dressing room afterwards.

"But I've been completely honest with them, we've had probably 65/75 per cent possession and in the final third our decision making was poor our final pass end product all off today. What frustrates me most is really their goalkeeper hasn't really had a save to make.

"But fair play to GNP they've set up well they defended their box well and ultimately they've had one chance and scored it so congratulations to them.

"I'm looking forward to playing them again at their place, more importantly for now looking forward to putting this one right and the reaction which I've no doubt at all I'll get."
