Kenilworth Wardens Reserves maintained their 100 per cent winning start to the season with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Coundon Court FC.

The Wardens looked shaky and unorganised in the early stages of the game and struggled to get any meaningful attacks of passages of play together.

The Coundon Court attackers caused Wardens' midfield and defence problems and were rewarded for the persistent efforts to break the Wardens down shortly after the half way mark in the first half.

A dubious penalty was awarded when the Coundon Court striker sprung the Wardens defence. The ball seemingly was going out of play but the oncoming Jack Lee made contact with the Coundon striker who wasn't giving up on the lost cause.

The penalty was tucked away into the left hand side of the goal leaving Wardens Frustrated.

After this the Wardens found a rhythm and started applying pressure on the Coundon defence.

A deflected Will Kershaw header from an Ashley Saines throw saw the referee award the Wardens a penalty with the Coundon defender obstructing the ball with his hand. Sean Povey tucked the resulting penalty away with confidence, leaving the keeper no chance.

After this the Wardens struggled again as this only seemed to motivate and galvanise the Coundon Court team. The pressure was relentless and just before half time they were awarded a soft free kick just outside the area.

The free kick was dispatched neatly into the bottom corner beating the onlooking Jack Lee to make it 2-1 to Coundon.

The Wardens held on to get to half time trailing by just one goal.

System and positional changes followed as the Wardens were determined to get a result.

The first 10 minutes were cagey but the Wardens frustrated the Coundon team with them not creating like they did in the first half.

The Wardens took full advantage of this and looked like a completely different team compared to the first half. The brilliant midfield trio of James Butcher, Dane Watt and Rhys Bufton carried the Wardens through the second half and kept them ticking.

The young Mackenzie Wood and captain Archie Evans combined well down the left and got the Wardens into the attacking third constantly.

The Coundon defence failed to deal with the long Saines throw-in which resulted in Charlie Waters brilliantly glancing the ball into the roof of the net to equalise.

The Wardens had their tales up, constantly creating chances with the tireless Shaun Povey proving to be a handful. The Wardens shape was forcing Coundon to make error after error and frustrated them.

The fantastic Saines showed his athleticism seven minutes from time when he carried the ball from the Wardens penalty area over the half way line.

He played a perfectly weighted pass to Charlie Waters on the right, who beat his man and crossed to Shaun Povey, his smart finish nestled into the bottom left corner. A well taken goal and deserved brace for the Wardens striker.

The late goal proved to be the decisive one as the Wardens held on to claim a deserved three points.

The Wardens sit second in the league behind Kenilworth Sporting who have played one more game than them.
