Two late goals for Kenilworth Wardens Reserves saw them come behind against Jet Blade Reserves to snatch a point in the Peter Toogood League Cup.

Kenilworth came into the game on the back off a five-game losing streak, meaning the cup competition was a welcome distraction from their league form.

Manager Adam Maltby had to miss the game, but without a first team game Eamonn Richards took the side and brought Tom Griffith and Guy Pearson from the firsts.

Blades were in a similar situation with their first team game being called off, bringing in several first team players.

Wardens began the game well, dominating the ball in the first two thirds and playing some good football.

Sean Povey, Dane Watt and Lewis Barry all had half chances in the first 25 minutes, unfortunately none of their efforts tested the keeper.

Wardens' defence looked solid and meant that makeshift keeper James Carro didn't have a save to make.

However on 35 minutes a Blades Corner was pulled back to their midfielder who smashed in from 25 yards out.

The second half continued in the same vain, with Wardens limiting chances for Blades whilst dominating possession without creating chances.

However on 70 minutes Blades made it 2-0 when their striker tapped in after a corner wasn't dealt with.

After losing five on the bounce it would have been easy for Wardens to lose hope. But the Kenilworth side improved from this point, with Pearson and Will Kershaw making a big impact off the bench.

Pearson had already started to dictate the attacking play, having three shots on target from distance which the keeper save.

But his goal came on the 74th minute, when Watt played a clever pass, Pearson unleashed from 20 yards leaving the keeper with no chance.

Four minutes later, Wardens equalised. After a patient build up, Kershaw put in an amazing cross, beating everyone apart from the hard working Lewis Barry who passed home.

Despite Wardens being on top, several defensive errors led to a Blades chance just before the whistle, but Carro pulled off a great save to keep the game 2-2.

In the last minute of the game, a counter attack broke where Richards played in Pearson whose brilliant cross was met by Barry who was unable to turn it into the back of the net.

"Organising today was a nightmare. No ref, no goalkeeper, and Blades' first team off," Richards said after the game.

"But as caretaker manager today, I throughly enjoyed it, I've wanted to get my hands on these lads and work on their shape, build up play and attitude for years.

"These lads did everything I asked of them today and they deserved to win. Next week they'll be back with the brilliant Adam, and I'm sure if they get into shape, play simply and be positive they'll get a result."

Kenilworth Wardens are proudly sponsored by Aaron Richards Carpets and Flooring.

"I can't recommend them high enough"

"From start to finish you were reliable, punctual, professional and provided incredible customer service. We would highly recommend you to anyone"

"Aaron and their team are great at what they do!"
