Kenilworth Wardens lined up at Castle Farm against Rugby Reserves in their preseason friendly tonight

Having defeated Bishop Itchington last time out, Wardens extended their unbeaten preseason run with a 1-1 draw against Rugby Reserves today.

The first half was mostly dominated by the home side, who could have taken the lead on ten minutes following a defensive error, but the Rugby keeper saved from the resulting one-on-one.

The most notable incident of the opening exchanges came after twenty minutes when Wardens' winger Jack Taylor was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes having reportedly asked the referee whether he had "got a lift with the opposition."

Despite being down to ten men, the home side continued to control the match, with Sam Taylor and Eamonn Richards dictating the play in the middle of the park comfortably.

Wardens should have scored on thirty minutes. The ball came in from a cross before being headed onto the bar twice, and then narrowly over the bar and out for a goal kick.

The first shot of the game for Rugby came after 42 minutes, but was so high and wide the ball had to be retrieved from a bush.

Despite the dominance of Wardens, they found themselves 1-0 down at the break.

A low shot from the edge of the box looked as if it was going wide, but trickled into the bottom right corner as keeper Andy Whitehouse watched in horror as it rolled in.

Wardens made six changes at half time as their players continued to get precious minutes before the season began.

Their dominance was rewarded shortly after half time. On fifty minutes Taylor played in a free kick from the right hand side. After fantastic movement Tom Shanley latched onto the cross and was able to sweep the ball across his body into the bottom corner.

Wardens then had more chances to take the lead.

On 68 minutes, Taylor found himself behind the Rugby defence, but his ball back from the bi-line to Richards was shut down.

Following more control by the home side, on 79 minutes, Dan Twigger did have the ball in the back of the net for Wardens, but the whistle had already blown for offside.

On another day Wardens could have won by four of five goals, but their front players appeared to have left their shooting boots at home.

With one more friendly to play on Tuesday, Wardens will line up against Jaguar/Daimler on Saturday September 12 in their first match of the season.
