Second placed Kenilworth Wardens were held to a draw by third placed Fillongley to maintain the six point gap between the two sides.

Wardens started strongly and thought they scored an early goal when a ball from Luca Valle was flicked on by Andy Legg and Guy Pearson ran around his marker to sweep home.

But the linesman's flag saw the goal ruled out, much to the annoyance of the Kenilworth faithful.

Fillongley managed to get into the game and Wardens were lucky when a through ball was inadvertently deflected by Eamonn Richards to Fillongley's striker, who narrowly missed the target after pressure from keeper Andy Whitehouse.

Both teams threatened as the half continued, with Legg, Sam Taylor and Valle having half chances which didn't hit the target.

Wardens were then dealt a blow when Pearson went off injured after 30 minutes.

However it was his replacement Alex Nwafor who helped open the scoring.

Griffith, Richards and Valle passed the ball around the back and found Nwafor on the half way line. Nwafor beat four players before entering the box and pulling the ball back to Valle who expertly passed the ball into the corner from 20 yards out.

Despite a positive start to the second half for the travellers, hosts Fillongley equalised on 55 minutes through a swift counter attack.

Wardens brought on Rudd to bring some balance to the game and both teams had half chances without making the keeper work.

Twigger managed to get in behind three times but due to the low quality of the pitch wasn't able to get his shots on target.

Wardens nearly took the lead after a good move started by Taylor found Taylor able to shoot, he passed the ball to Legg who's shot beat the keeper but not the crossbar.

Fillongley came close after this chance, hitting the post.

In the final minute of the game, Wardens had a great chance to win the match.

A brilliant Sam Taylor ball into the box bobbled off Legg 2 yards out and into the arms of the grateful keeper.

But manager Richards, managing his 200th career game, was left frustrated by the conditions.

"There's a reason Fillongley have only lost once this season," he said "they're a decent side and that pitch is horrendous- essentially it's just one big hill.

"We played well, probably had the better of the chances, but honestly a draw is a fair result from the game.

"We've got a great group of players, playing on that pitch with that wind isn't ideal for us, but we had some really good performances.

"Tommy Griffith was different class today and by far the best player on the pitch."

Kenilworth Wardens Reserves lost 7-2 to Crick Athletic.

Manager Adam Maltby said: "I've said in the last few games we've been unlucky not to win or at least get something from the game but today was the opposite, we've got what we deserved so well done to them.

"It's always going to be difficult to get as result if you gift goals as cheap as today."
