Kenilworth Wardens backed up their opening day win over Folly Lane Reserves as they demolished Gudwara 5-1 at home.

Wardens' first goal came from a planned counter attack from a defensive corner, as the hosts left three players forward who all combined for the goal

Butler won the ball from the corner and drove forward passing to Luca Vale, who cleverly flicked the ball out wide to Guy Pearson. Pearson drove the ball forward 50 yards to cross for Roger Kingston to pass home for the full back's second goal in two games.

Wardens were sloppy after they took the lead and were pegged back after a long throw was deflected into the path of Butler, who could do nothing to stop the own goal.

Wardens then settled into a pattern of possession on a hot day, keeping the ball around the defensive and midfield.

The Kenilworth side then restored their lead. After patient build up around the back, the ball was passed to Ben Edmunds who played a cross field pass too Pearson, who confidently slotted home.

Wardens slow and deliberate build up continued to be profitable. Edmunds was played through down the right, passed to Lee Jassi, who squared to Pearson for his second of the game.

Wardens continued to create similar chances, without adding to their 3-1 lead. Pearson was frustrated not to score his hat trick before half time, when a through ball from Phil Rudd ran to the offside Jassi and Edmunds who left it to the onside Pearson to score. However the goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Despite Gudwara pressing higher whilst trying to get back into the game, Wardens continued with their patient build up and were unlucky not to build their lead further with chances falling to Edmunds, Jassi and Richards who hit the bar.

Wardens introduced Tom Shanley who made an immediate impact on the 70th minute, cutting out a poor throw from the keeper, Shanley drove down the right before crossing to Pearson to tap in his hat trick.

Despite another offside flag, the goal stood as Pearson was behind Shanley as he crossed.

In the build up to the goal, Gudwara's keeper was injured, as the side had used all their substitutions, an outfield player went in goal and left them with 10 men.

With 15 minutes left, a Gudwara player put in a strong tackle which was deemed a foul. In the protests, another Gudwara player was sinbinned, meaning they were down to nine.

With 10 minutes left, Wardens won a corner, Shanley put a brilliant delivery in which was defended at the last gasp for another corner.

A spell of six straight corners finally yielded a goal. On the sixth attempt a ball was cleared off the line into captain Tom Griffiths shins and bundled over the line.

Wardens kept possession until the final whistle, fully deserving of their win but playing within their potential.

The result leaves the first team second in the Coventry Alliance Division One.
