Andy Legg was the hat trick hero as Kenilworth Wardens put four past Coventry Colliery to maintain their position at the top of the Coventry Alliance Premier Table.

Guy Pearson added a late fourth for the hosts after captain Legg extended his goal tally to seven in just four games this season.

And while goals from Arron Hope and Sean McDonagh denied the hosts a clean sheet, Kenilworth manager Eamonn Richards was full of praise for his newly-promoted side.

"We spoke before the game about what a winner is. Essentially winners find a way to win. To exploit the weaknesses and take their moments," he said.

"Once again we're indebted to captain Andy Legg for his hat trick and vice-captain Guy Pearson for his goal and two assists.

"Our back four and Whitehouse played really well throughout."

Despite a fast start for the visitors - who remain without a win this season - Wardens created the first clear chance when Pearson fired wide from 12 yards after neat play between him and Jack Thomas had set him free in the box.

Wardens forced Colliery's keeper into his first save of the game when a half cleared corner was passed back to Richards who beat his man 18 yards out and shot low, with the keeper making a brilliant finger tip save at his near post.

Colliery would feel hard done by not to be up, with a mixture of poor finishing, good last ditch defending and excellent shot stopping from Andy Whitehouse keeping the game goalless.

And it was against the run of play that Wardens took the lead on 35 minutes.

Luca Valle passed the ball to Pearson on the left, whose perfect cross was met by Legg to expertly head home.

The lead was not to last long as Colliery equalised with a well worked goal five minutes after the restart through McDonagh.

But on 55 minutes the much-improved Wardens retook the lead.

Pearson's pressure forced the full back into a poor back pass, which was intercepted by Legg who rounded the keeper and finished from the tightest of angles.

On 65 a dubious handball decision was given in Wardens' favour 30 yards out. Richards whipped in the free kick which was met by Legg, lobbing the Colliery keeper.

On 80 minutes Colliery played a short free kick from the back, Pearson won the ball back and expertly lobbed the keeper from 20 yards out for his 99th goal contribution since the Wardens restarted.

Colliery did pull a consultation goal back five minutes from time, with a brilliant pull down and finish from Hope but the hosts held on for the three points.

And while the result leaves his side with four wins from five Richards said there is still work to be done.

"The first half performance was dire," he added.

"If I was the Colliery manager I'd be disappointed to be on the wrong side of today. But winners and big players step up in big moments, and we had a lot of that today.

"There are no easy games in this year, every week is a battle, but if we take it week by week and keep winning who knows where we will finish."
