Kenilworth Wardens captain Harry Johnson has pronounced himself satisfied with the opening quarter of his team's Birmingham Premier League Division Two season.
Wardens' planned Warwickshire derby clash with Dorridge was one of four round five games abandoned without a ball being bowled after the entire six-match card had bitten the dust seven days earlier.
As a result, the Glasshouse Park club now lie in fourth place, nine points behind surprise pacesetters Wem who beat Pelsall in one of the two surviving contests. Fancied Halesowen lost to Himley in the other fixture.
But after launching their campaign with three consecutive wins, Johnson's team remain unbeaten and their skipper has been especially pleased by the number of players who have already made significant contributions.
"It's been great to see different people stepping up and taking responsibility to get us over the line," he said.
"We've got one more week of win/lose cricket before the format changes to 55 over games with a draw. It would be great to end the first section of the campaign unbeaten."
Wardens travel to Wolverhampton on Saturday and despite the former giants currently languishing at the wrong end of the table, Johnson is wary of the threat they pose.
"Wolverhampton have had a modest start to the season but are full of dangerous players so it will be a good test for us," he said.
"Looking forward to the change of format, with bowlers able to deliver 17 overs we may look to lengthen our batting line up as opposed to going into games with six bowlers.
"Obviously the red ball poses a different challenge for both bowlers and batters and tends to lend itself to a more attritional style of cricket.
"It's really important that we adapt quickly and hit the ground running to maintain our momentum from the opening weeks."
Despite the club's recent weekend action being lost to the weather a number of Wardens' young side have caught the eye in representative cricket.
Paceman Jabez Weale has been seen captaining Warwick University while Johnson's fine start to the campaign included a rapid 80 for Cardiff UCCE against Warwickshire Second XI.
And while Tommy Rex has featured for Warwickshire under 18s, teenage left-arm spinner Josh Baker and wicket-keeper Henry Cullen made useful contributions to Worcestershire Second XI's win over minor county Shropshire.
"It's great to see so many of our lads doing well in representative cricket at a very good level," Johnson said. "We have a very young side at the moment and this kind of exposure can only be good for their individual development as well as our growth as a team."
