A former Coventry City and Everton footballer, who now lives in Kenilworth, will be the next England Under-21 football manager the FA has today confirmed.

The former midfielder Lee Carsley will replace former Coventry City boss Aidy Boothroyd, who left the under-21 role in April.

Boothroyd stepped down following England's poor performance at the European Under-21 Championship this year, where his side finished bottom of their group.

TalkSport had initially reported the appointment in early June.

Carsley, who has been manager of the England under-20s since September 2020, will be assisted by former pro Ashely Cole.

Carsley said: "I see it as a massive honour and achievement to coach the Under-21s.

"It is a really prestigious position with a lot of responsibility as has been proven by the calibre of predecessors in this role. Gareth (Southgate) and Steve Holland have always been very supportive and I am looking forward to working more closely with them.

"We have a great opportunity to help the senior side by developing the best young talent in this country while combining that with being successful at U21 level."

As well as his role in the national setup, Carsley has also been a coach at Coventry, Sheffield United, Manchester City, and Brentford.

The 47-year-old spent most of his playing career at Everton, as well as two stints at Coventry, and a two-year spell at rivals Birmingham City.

Carsley, who was raised in Sheldon in Birmingham, played 40 times for the Republic of Ireland.
