Kenilworth MP's column: The importance of VE Day

By Sir Jeremy Wright 2nd May 2025

Eighty years ago on 8 May 1945, Victory in Europe (VE) Day marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, a moment of collective relief and jubilation after nearly six years of devastating conflict. In London, over a million people flooded the streets, celebrating beneath Union Flags, whilst the King and Prime Minister addressed the nation.

Yet amid the celebrations, there was mourning too for the millions lost, the families fractured and the lives changed forever.

This year marks the eightieth anniversary of that historic day. It is a poignant milestone that could likely be among the last major anniversaries where we can honour living veterans of the war.

Across our nation and the Commonwealth, communities are gathering in remembrance and gratitude. From tea dances and commemorative services to parades and moments of reflection, these events are not merely ceremonial but are acts of collective memory.

Over the coming days, I will have the privilege of attending several such gatherings in our local area, which will feature the lighting of beacons to symbolise the 'light of peace' that emerged from the darkness of war, and the ringing of church bells in remembrance of the celebrations eight decades ago.

Across the country, communities will be taking part in similar acts of remembrance, coming together to honour the past and preserve the stories and values that have shaped our shared history.

The significance of VE Day extends beyond historical remembrance.

It serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity that can emerge from adversity. In light of contemporary political and economic challenges, the spirit of VE Day inspires us to uphold the principles of freedom, democracy and peace.

By engaging in these commemorations, we not only honour those who served but also reaffirm our commitment to the values they fought to protect.
