A planning application to turn the former Poundland shop in Kenilworth into a Wetherspoon pub has been withdrawn.

The pub giant announced in July that it would be investing £2million in the unit at The Square, with plans submitted to Warwick District Council in August.

Just weeks later Wetherspoon has pulled the proposal from consideration - but has promised that a fresh scheme will be submitted.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said to Nub News: "There is a discrepancy on the plans and our planning consultant's advice was to resubmit rather than amend the application.

"We are still committed to opening a pub in Kenilworth."

Westherspoon did not say what the discrepancy was.

The news comes just week after Kenilworth Town Council objected to the plans, with councillors raising concerns about the proposed beer garden at the rear of the premises.

However, members were in agreement that turning the empty shop into a pub would benefit the town centre.

Cllr Alix Dearing said: "I can't say I have much time for the CEO [of Wetherspoon] but on balance I have to say I am minded to approve of this because you can't fight the fact that retail is in decline.

"And I think there is an opportunity to make an attractive building here which will attract more people to the town.

"It will support the visitors, encourage more footfall and promote the visitor economy and experience. And hopefully it will attract people to the independents."

Wetherspoon says it will create 60 venues at the town centre venue.

Given that the shop has been empty since January 2020, Wetherspoon says "there is no longer a retail interest in the site".

The application said: "Once operational, the proposed development will have significant positive impacts on the local economy, including that of the wider town centre."

It added: "The proposed development is also addressing the threat to Kenilworth town centre identified in the local plan by supporting the economic growth of the town centre and by encouraging the footfall within the town centre itself which will have beneficial impacts to the local economy."
