Town councillors have criticised the "disturbing" lack of movement from the county council over calls for improved safety measures around the new Kenilworth School.

In October Kenilworth Town Council (KTC) called on its county colleagues, including leader Cllr Izzi Seccombe, for an "urgent" meeting to address concerns from parents.

But speaking at last week's meeting, town councillors expressed their frustration at being left waiting for a full response from Warwickshire County Council (WCC), let alone a meeting.

"Despite this request for the urgent meeting in October, and repeated chasing by the town clerk since then, this meeting has not been forthcoming and no proper response has been received, after an initial acknowledgement from the leader of the council," said Cllr David Bailey, reading out a statement from members.

"The town councillors involved consider this deeply disappointing and unacceptable.

"This is about road safety for children at school and should be an urgent priority for the county council."

Members were in agreement that more action was needed, and decided to call for an "immediate response" and "explanation" from Cllr Seccombe.

Council leader Cllr James Kennedy said the lack of movement from WCC was "very disturbing".

While Cllr Richard Dickson said: "This is serious for a number of issues.

"Firstly, the county council, both officers and councillors, don't seem to have responded to us, or acknowledged the issue. The completion of the Dencer Drive does seem to have helped [with safety].

"The bigger issue is at the end of the school day. At the start of the day the children arrive over a 25 minute time span whereas at the end of the day all the kids come out together. And it is getting worse this time of year because it is dark."

Cllr Dickson also said there were longer-term impacts that need to be considered.

"The fact that the county council really really does concern me, for the safety of the kids," he added.

"We also need to learn the lessons for when another 600 houses are going to be built behind the school, because there are going to be more traffic issues there.

"We know they were late in getting the work completed in the area, but let's at least acknowledge mistakes were made there and see how that can be fixed for the future."

In response to a request for comment from Nub News, Cllr Matecki, portfolio holder for transport and planning at WCC said: "Arrangements for a meeting between WCC Officers, and elected members from WCC, KTC, and other interested stakeholders to review the pedestrian and cycling facilities around the new Kenilworth School, are being made and suggested dates have now been shared.

"WCC Officers are keen to feedback on recently completed work on Glasshouse Lane, to explain the improvements which are proposed as a result of adjacent housing developments, and to share proposals for wider improvements to the waking and cycling network in Kenilworth."
