Slight tweak to Kenilworth Castle crossing but plans move forward
By James Smith 4th Mar 2026
The proposed new crossing to Kenilworth Castle looks set to move a matter of metres along the road, but continues to move forward.
Kenilworth Town Council has been working on the new link for Castle Road for over a year as it looks to find a safe way for walkers to reach the town's main tourist attraction.
Having held a public consultation and now decided on a preferred spot for the crossing, the town council is waiting on English Heritage to progress the path which will continue from the road to the castle itself.
An update at last week's Kenilworth Town Council meeting revealed the slight change comes due to "root protection issues".
Town clerk Maggie Field explained: "There is a slight issue that the crossing has got to move. It is likely to move by three metres or so."
Meanwhile, Cllr Alan Chalmers provided a further update to the next steps.
"Hot off the press is that detailed design is finished," he said.
"There will be an independent safety survey to make sure it is safe.
"The latest is that English Heritage will have an internal review meeting and then will be able to proceed with funding proposals.
"It is in progress and is making progress.
"The question is when they will be able to fund, but it seems all in hand."
In December it was confirmed more planning permission will be needed to sort the path from the crossing to the castle.
English Heritage has already been given planning permission to remove some trees at the start of the paths.
The crossing to the castle had been included as a priority in the neighbourhood plan approved in 2018.
