More planning permission and funding will need to be secured before a new pedestrian crossing to Kenilworth Castle can be installed.
Kenilworth Town Council has been working on the new link for Castle Road for over a year as it looks to find a safe way for walkers to reach the town's main tourist attraction.
Having held a public consultation and now decided on a preferred spot for the crossing, the town council is waiting on English Heritage to progress the path which will continue from the road to the castle itself.
Providing an update at last week's full council meeting, Cllr Zoe Leventhal said: "We have got the town council ends in train, what we are seeking is an update from English Heritage as to what the timelines are.
"We have got funding for the crossing agreed, and we have got the county council agreement to put in the crossing.
"The element that is in the control of English Heritage is the path from the crossing to the castle.
"We know they are going to need to seek funding for that and planning permission."
Cllr Leventhal said English Heritage is looking at submitting a pre-application to Warwick District Council this December, before a full planning application goes forward in February.
She continued: "They are aiming for approval of that by perhaps mid-May.
"Alongside that they are going to be seeking funding.
"We are still 100 per cent committed to progressing it, and so are English Heritage."
English Heritage has already been given planning permission to remove some trees at the start of the paths.
The crossing to the castle had been included as a priority in the neighbourhood plan approved in 2018.
