Kenilworth's infamous 'Custard Corner' has been brought further to life with the planting of some rhubarb and other plants this week.

Kenilworth Community Gardeners (KCG) has recently added a planter to the area at the end of Station Road.

Last year the closed section of road received significant national and local media attention, even featuring on Have I Got News For You.

Neighbouring coffee shop Morning Sunshine also poked fun at Station Road on April Fools Day, joking customers it was the yellow-themed cafe's new outdoor seating area.

The area has since become a 'tourist attraction' with ratings on Google Maps and was even the arena for a sensational fundraising marathon by local man Ian Beasley.

Now members of KCG have given it a spruce up.

"This area is known locally as 'Custard Corner' and is much loved by the town," the group said.

"Diane Shores has a cheeky card featuring the parklet and it has featured on BBC's 'Have I Got News for You'.

"On this basis KCG have planted some .... wait for it ... rhubarb!

"There are also some rhubarb and custard coloured tulips for the spring.

"Please enjoy the other planting along Station Road, outside Abbey Medical Centre, the vets, B&M and the Station House.

"KCG's aim is to create joy and more sustainable wildlife corridors within an urban environment to benefit the community.

"If you have any suggestions for new areas or want to get involved then please contact us. Or you could develop a patch of your own.

"Please follow us on Facebook or email us [email protected] but most importantly we hope the rhubarb and custard makes you smile!"

Last year Nub News revealed some £53,000 was spent on Station Road's new look.

Before the painting, the closure of the town centre road had already proved controversial, with locals split on whether it should have remained shut after the pandemic.

Station Road first closed in 2020 as a temporary measure during the Covid-19 pandemic to allow better social distancing by preventing pedestrians crowding near the junction with Warwick Road.

Kenilworth Town Council then requested the closure become permanent.

A consultation was launched through Warwickshire County Council and the closure was signed off in 2023
