Plans to build a 15-metre tall 5G mast on a residential street in Kenilworth have been refused by district planners.

CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Limited has applied to Warwick District Council for outline permission to build the pole on the pavement at the junction of Whites Row and St John's Street.

The telecommunications company said this was the best location in the town to help fill the "coverage hole" in the area.

But the scheme has been turned down by WDC with an officer's report saying it would negatively impact the appearance of the area.

"In the opinion of the local planning authority, the introduction of a 15-metre tall monopole in this residential location would cause unacceptable harm to the residential character and appearance of the area," the report said.

"Furthermore, due to its proximity to residential dwellings, it would cause unacceptable harm to the outlook from those properties.

"Insufficient information has been submitted to demonstrate that this is the least harmful option.

"The proposal is thereby considered to be unneighbourly and contrary to the aforementioned policies."

More than 30 objections were made to the plans.

Kenilworth Town Council objected to the application with councillors questioning why several other locations across the town had been discounted because they were too near to houses.

CK Hutchison Networks Ltd - which owns telecommunications and internet service provider Three - has recently had an application to build an 18-metre high pole in Stoneleigh approved on appeal after the district council had originally blocked the plans.
