Up to 400 new student accommodation rooms could be built at the University of Warwick if plans are signed off by Warwick District Council.

Rainier Real Estate Ltd has applied for outline permission for the works off Westwood Heath Road.

Plans state the buildings could be up to five storeys in places, and will help the university reach its target of 1,200 new bed spaces by 2033.

If approved, the scheme would see some buildings on site demolished to make way for the flats.

"Making best use of a brownfield previously developed site in accordance with national and local planning policies," the application said.

"Built development is to take place on the brownfield part of the site, with the majority of existing green infrastructure and landscaping retained."

The application is only for outline plans, meaning a detailed 'reserved matters' application would also need to be submitted and approved before construction begins.

The application continued: "The substantial positive weight that is to be given to the redevelopment of brownfield previously developed land under national planning policy, significant positive weight attributed to meeting the university's need for PBSA [purpose built student accommodation] on a site adjoining the core campus, moderate positive weight given to addressing housing needs, sustainable transport improvements and economic benefits, and the limited positive weight given to securing biodiversity net gain all comprise significant material considerations."

The application is split across Warwick District Council and Coventry City Council's boundaries.
