Owner of Kenilworth Michelin Star pub wins Restaurateur of the Year award
The owner of a Kenilworth pub which has held a Michelin Star for eight years has been named the Independent Restaurateur of the Year at a national awards celebrating the "best and brightest businesses and individuals in hospitality".
Andreas Antona snapped up the prize at The Cateys awards this Tuesday (July 5) which were held at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London.
Antona is the chef owner of The Cross at Kenilworth and Simpsons in Edgbaston - both of which hold Michelin stars.
Described by The Times as "the godfather of modern Birmingham food" he also launched Antona at Home, a nationwide meal and food delivery service, last year.
The Cateys award winners are all nominated, selected and rewarded by their peers - including TV and Michelin Star chef Tom Kerridge
Antona saw off competition from four other restaurateur to lift the prize.
The Restaurateur of the Year - Independent award was given to the candidate who demonstrated "the ability to combine flair and innovation with good business acumen".
"They must be setting standards to which others can aspire," Cateys said.
"They may own and operate several establishments but they will not be themed or branded.
"The judges will be looking for a solid and/or outstanding performance in the past financial year.
"Financial information must be provided in order to demonstrate good business judgement."
Judge Tom Kerridge described Antona as: "An exceptional restaurateur whose passion for our sector is inspirational.
"He has shown pure class, integrity and commitment to the industry, not only through exceptional stewardship of his restaurants but also through charity, the British Culinary Federation and the Bocuse D'Or."
