Plans to build a football stadium near Kenilworth continue to look uncertain as Coventry City Football Club owners Sisu are reported to be interested in buying the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Sky Blues have announced plans with the University of Warwick to build a new stadium which will also form part of a proposed eco-park.

However, a planning application for the development is yet to be submitted, and it may not be needed if the club's owners secure a long-term future at the CBS Arena.

Arena Coventry Limited, which manages the stadium, is on the brink of administration as it looks for a new owner for the arena.

Wasps, which had owned the CBS Arena and rented it out to the football club, went into administration last month.

But now BBC CWR political reporter Simon Gilbert has claimed that Sisu is one of four "credible" parties "circling" to take on the stadium.

He also says former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and the NEC Group are interested in taking on the arena.

The Sky Blues confirmed yesterday that it would play tonight's (November 1) home fixture against Blackburn Rovers at the CBS Arena having previously announced it was looking at backup venues.

Last month Cllr Gary Ridley called on the leader of Coventry City Council to "bury the hatchet with the Sky Blues" to help them find a long-term home at the CBS Arena.

"Coventry City FC must be part of the solution if we are to go forward with a viable, permanent, lasting solution settlement at the CBS Arena," he said.

"We are not made of stadiums in Coventry, and we can't just keep building them around the city."

While Cllr George Duggins ducked answering whether he had been in contact with Sisu prior to the meeting, he said: "The ambition is that the club stays at the Coventry Building Society Arena and remains at the Coventry Building Society Arena for a long time. That is very clear."
