New Commonwealth Games cycle racks could be installed across Kenilworth town centre
New cycle racks could be installed across Kenilworth if a bid to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is successful.
Warwick District Council has applied for a number of bespoke racks, designed as part of the games' legacy, to be put across towns in the area.
As it waits to hear whether the bid has been successful or not, Kenilworth Town Council has been asked to suggest areas where the racks should be placed.
"They asked us, at relatively short notice, for where those should be," said Cllr Andrew Milton at last week's finance and general services committee meeting.
"So bear in mind that they need a bit of space, the areas that I have put forward are Abbey End square – there is a big shortage of cycle racks there which tend to get covered by the market.
"District council car parks, so Abbey End and Square West as the two obvious examples.
"Then the site at Barrow Road outside the sorting office.
"Also there is a spot opposite Sainsbury's on Warwick Road."
The council was also told that some funding would need to be provided for them to be installed.
And that a number of new racks had already been installed outside the Kenilworth Centre.
Councillors did ask whether a rack could be placed outside Wilkinson on Station Road, but Cllr Milton explained: "I tried to avoid areas where there was doubt about who owned the areas.
"Obviously at Wilkos we have tried to engage with them about that space."
And with the new racks not being covered, the town's main sheltered cycle storage will still be in the Waitrose car park.
"At Waitrose there has been a habit of them blocking their cycle racks with some sort of contraption on wheels," Cllr Milton added.
"After several emails I was successful in getting it cleared. But unfortunately when I returned the next week it had reappeared."
The council said it would monitor the situation there.
