Contracts for the demolition and redevelopment of Castle Farm Recreation Centre will be signed "in the coming days", Warwick District Council has revealed.

Archaeological studies carried out on site last week found "nothing of significance" meaning the council can press ahead with knocking the building down.

This week hoardings will be put up, with vegetation cleared as the workforce begins to remove fixtures and fittings from the building.

"Simultaneously contracts will be signed with AR Demolition and Kier in the coming days," the council said.

The news comes just days after residents called on the council to halt the development and reconsider creating a new sports centre on the east side of Kenilworth.

But WDC's portfolio holder for economy and culture, Cllr Liam Bartlett said he was pleased that "significant progress" was being made in building "these wonderful new facilities".

The car park will be closed for the foreseeable future with just six spaces left open for public parking.

The skate park and children's playground will remain open for the entirety of the project.

The new multi-million-pound facility will include a sports hall, 80-station gym and fitness studios.

Further updates on the Castle Farm Recreation Centre and Abbey Fields Swimming Pool redevelopment plans are available on the Warwick District Council website.
