A much-loved Kenilworth shop, which first opened in 1991, has had its last full day of trading before closing for good.

Buyrite, which was opened by Arthur Harrison in 1991, was almost completely clear of stock as it shut for the final time.

The Station Road store announced it would close after plans to develop parts of Talisman Square into flats and more shops were announced.

The shop has been run by Arthur Harrison, who opened his first store in Coventry in 1969, aged 18.

Known locally as 'Arthur's', the store was expected to close in March but was given an extra few weeks to sell its remaining stock.

However, Arthur, 73, has been unable to be in the store during much of the extra month, having been in hospital for the past couple of weeks.

Daughter Louise Harrison told Nub News: "He has been in hospital for the last two weeks.

"He shouldn't really have been here, but he still came to work. He was hoping to come out for the past few days.

"He is not the sort of person to sit still in hospital. He loves working and being here.

"I have been telling him for years to retire but he is one of those people who loves coming to work."

Following the announcement of the closure, the shop has been even busier than normal.

Most of the stock had been sold, with a lot of the shelves already donated to local charities.

Louise said what stock was left would be donated to charity.

"We have got lots of bird seed because it is one of our best sellers. We weren't going to get another order but we had to!" she added.

"We will donate a lot of what's left to the Lion's Club and some of it will come in handy for my dad. We have donated a lot already."

Having previously had an application to build student accommodation at Talisman Square approved, Cobalt Estates submitted fresh redevelopment plans to Warwick District Council last July.

If approved, the project will see a four-storey block of flats built - although Kenilworth Town Council has objected to the plans.

The district council is yet to make a decision on the application.
