Much-loved Kenilworth shop to stay open for extra month before closing for good
A Kenilworth shopkeeper who opened his first store in 1969 is set to keep his business open for another month before closing for good.
Buyrite, which was opened by Arthur Harrison in 1991, was expected to close this weekend, but will now stay open until April 28.
Arthur, 73, opened his first store in Coventry aged 18 before setting up in Kenilworth more than 30 years ago.
But now with plans to develop parts of Talisman Square into flats and more shops, he has announced the popular DIY shop will close.
"It was meant to be tomorrow [March 25], but they have extended it by one month," Arthur's daughter Louise told Nub News.
"He hasn't cleared all the stock, and he wasn't given much notice, so it has worked out for the best really.
"He is very pleased with that."
Following the announcement of the closure, the shop has been even busier than normal, with lots of locals coming in to wish Arthur well.
And Louise said the closure brings a mix of emotions for the family.
"He really loves it in Kenilworth, the customers have been great," she added.
"He has got some really loyal customers who he will really miss. He said to me yesterday how much he will miss coming to work.
"He has got the motivation of three men, even on a Sunday he still goes to the warehouse, so he never gets any time off.
"So I think this will do him some good really to get some rest."
Having previously had an application to build student accommodation at Talisman Square approved, Cobalt Estates submitted fresh redevelopment plans to Warwick District Council last July.
If approved, the project will see a four-storey block of flats built - although Kenilworth Town Council has objected to the plans.
The district council is yet to make a decision on the application.
But with Buyrite set to close at the end of next month, Arthur added: "Come in and grab a bargain while you can!"
