'Let’s get it done right' say Kenilworth swimming pool campaigners

Let's not just get it done, let's get it done right!
That is the message to local councillors from campaigners in Kenilworth who want to make sure the future of the new swimming pools in the town is not decided by a quick decision.
On Thursday (November 2), Warwick District Council's (WDC) cabinet will discuss a report which recommends the council presses ahead with the new pools in Abbey Fields.
The report - put together by council officers - briefly considers the possibility of a pool elsewhere in the town, but says this could cost more than the original plans and would take at least two years longer to complete.
But local campaigners, who ran a stall in Talisman Square over the weekend to talk to locals, say the council should focus on making the right decision for the town, not the easy one.
"If you have time please also contact your local Kenilworth town and Warwick District Council councillors to ask that they don't make a quick decision but that they make the right decision," they said.
"The decision to build or not build on Abbey Fields has become a difficult one. Many have become worn down and given in to the 'let's just get it done whatever the cost' idea or the 'agree to this or risk having no pool at all' threats.
"We believe there are other options which would cost significantly less, be far better environmentally and offer substantially improved access for those of all abilities, disabilities, ages and preferences (including those with less seen disabilities)."
The group is asking for an independent review of all the options, which it says would take a few months.
They say the current data is "not reliable" so should not be used to make any decisions.
A new petition calling for the review now has over 1,200 signatures.
Council's Conundrum
An amended application for the designs for Abbey Fields has now been submitted for the council to consider, but it must also decide whether to press ahead with the project altogether.
Leader of the council, Cllr Ian Davison, has not ruled out the possibility of scrapping the project altogether.
But the report set to be discussed on Thursday recommends the Abbey Fields project go ahead and the council negotiate a new contract with Kier - the firm behind the build.
Previous estimates from Kier said the Abbey Field project could now cost as much as £22.6 million.
So far WDC has spent £3.39 million on the Abbey Fields project.
Earlier this month, Kenilworth Town Council agreed to write to its district colleagues to say the idea of no swimming at all should not be entertained.
Once cabinet has discussed the report next week, a decision will then be put to the full council on November 15.
