Over 1,100 people have signed a fresh petition calling for the district council to halt plans to build two new swimming pools in Abbey Fields.

Launched by The Kenilworth Lido Campaign, the fresh initiative says Warwick District Council (WDC) must reconsider its "outdated, and unworkable" designs.

The major milestone comes as locals await a decision on the future of the project which is expected to be made in November.

With the costs of building the new leisure centre in Abbey Fields set to increase even further, and the building works looking set to take even long than planned, councillors must decide what the next steps are.

And while leader of the council Cllr Ian Davison refused to rule out the possibility of Kenilworth being left with no swimming facilities at all, campaigners want the council to come up with a new plan.

"Construction has been halted due to archaeological finds on the proposed site and the current plans have had to be significantly re-designed which will undoubtedly add to the spiralling costs and ongoing delays in this project," the latest petition said.

"If you do not want Warwick District Council pouring more of our money into the existing outdated, and unworkable plan please support our request that WDC councillors call for a complete halt to the current Kenilworth Leisure project and carry out a full and transparent cross-party review of all the options."

The group said the current plans for Abbey Fields are "very far" from the best option.

Campaigners say other sites in town should be restored, with a more energy-efficient design including outdoor swimming considered.

The same council report which revealed the potential extra costs at Abbey Fields, also said a new site could cost at least £26.7 million, and would not be complete until 2028 at the earliest.

Until a decision is made on the future of Abbey Fields, the council will continue to work on that project.

"We will be proceeding to avoid any additional delay unless or until the decision is taken to stop the project," project manager for the new Abbey Fields leisure centre Padraig Herlihy said at last week's public meeting.

"The decision will be made in November about the future of the project.

"At the moment we have to continue, because otherwise we could delay the project further."
