A Kenilworth councillor will recommend that the town council officially supports Warwick District Council's review of the reopening of the Abbey Fields Lido this summer.

It was confirmed last week by leader of WDC Cllr Andrew Day that the district council was revisiting its earlier decision not to reopen the lido in 2021.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Richard Dickson will move that Kenilworth Town Council writes to WDC to welcome not only the review of the present situation, but also to endorse the actual reopening of the pool.

This year the town celebrates the 125th anniversary of outdoor swimming in Kenilworth, as it also awaits a district council planning application that could see the outdoor pool demolished in late 2021.

Cllr Dickson's proposal says: "This council writes to Warwick District Council ('WDC') to welcome WDC's announcement that it is reviewing its earlier decision not to re-open the District's only public outdoor pool this summer and to express the hope that it will decide that the significant benefit to many residents and visitors of doing so outweigh the costs."

The district council, which manages the outdoor pool with operators Everyone Active, has said it is reviewing not only the cost of 'essential' works needed, but also the operating costs as well as the predicted footfall at the lido.

Kenilworth Town Council will vote on the proposal at next week's (June 17) meeting.
