The leader of Warwick District Council has said that the council is reviewing the possibility of reopening the Abbey Fields lido this summer.

However, he has warned that 'extensive repairs' are needed before it can reopen.

The council, which manages the outdoor pool with operators Everyone Active, has said it is reviewing not only the cost of the works needed, but also the operating costs as well as the predicted footfall.

The indoor pool reopened on April 12, however the lido has remained closed since the last national lockdown. Following a decision in February by the council's executive, the final decision on the lido now falls to the portfolio holder for culture, tourism and leisure, the council leader and the head of cultural service.

Leader of Warwick District Council, Cllr Andrew Day has said: "Ahead of the anticipated announcement about the next unlocking step on the government's roadmap, scheduled for 21 June, careful consideration is being given to the preparations required to safely reopen the outdoor pool.

"Initial inspections have revealed that extensive repairs are required to return the outdoor pool to a safe operating condition, following an extended period of closure."

If the lido was to reopen this year it would mark the 125th anniversary of outdoor swimming in the town.

Cllr Day added: "In addition to this expense, we will also weigh-up the additional operating costs, taking into account the daily footfall during comparable seasons in previous years, to assess the public benefit of reopening the outdoor pool.

"Guided by advice from Swim England, our priority continues to be the safe operating of the indoor pool, allowing as much availability as possible for children to learn the important life skill of being able to swim."
