Kenilworth planning roundup: new crossing, Greenway link and school expansion
By James Smith 31st Oct 2026
Here are the biggest local planning and development stories from the past week in Kenilworth.
Safer Crossing
Plans for a new zebra crossing, speed humps and cycle route along Warwick Road could be approved before the end of the year.
Warwickshire County Council recently consulted on proposals to improve safety along the busy road, following calls from Kenilworth Town Council for better connections between The Pavilions housing development and the town.
The plans include a shared footpath and cycle track between Rouncil Lane and Wilkshire Road, alongside a new zebra crossing with a parallel cycle crossing south of the Rouncil Lane junction.
A further crossing is proposed at the junction of Newey Drive and Warwick Road.
The consultation attracted 18 responses, including one objection. A decision is expected to be made by the county council in December, with funding already in place for the work.
Greenway Progress
The "missing link" connecting the Kenilworth Greenway to another local cycle route is now "largely completed", a councillor has confirmed.
The new path will allow cyclists and pedestrians to join the Greenway from Coventry Road, connecting with the route towards Coventry.
Warwickshire County Council has been working on the project for several years, with £100,000 allocated to it in 2022.
The link has also featured in Kenilworth Town Council's cycling strategy since 2019.
However, a completion date has yet to be confirmed.
School Expansion
Work is set to begin on a new building for children with special educational needs at St John's Primary School in Kenilworth.
The project, which will provide additional places for children with social, emotional and mental health needs, is due to start in the penultimate week of November.
The building at the Mortimer Road school is expected to be ready for the start of the September 2027 school year, with construction works scheduled to last 44 weeks.
The project is a scaled-back version of a much larger expansion first revealed in 2023. The current scheme will not include extensions to two existing school buildings that would have created a further 210 school places.
Councillor Richard Dickson said enabling works had now started, following months of delays.
