A decision on a new zebra crossing, speed humps and cycle route along Warwick Road is expected before the end of the year.

Warwickshire County Council has recently held a public consultation on the changes to the busy route into town.

Kenilworth Town Council has been pushing for improved safety along Warwick Road since The Pavilions housing development was finished, with parents currently said to be "taking their lives in their hands" when they cross the street.

Current designs include a shared footpath and cycle track from the junction with Rouncil Lane to Wilkshire Road.

Also included in the plans is a zebra crossing with parallel cycle crossing across Warwick Road, just south of the Rouncil Lane junction.

This would be on a new speed hump, replacing two of the existing speed cushions.

The cycle path would link around the corner of Rouncil Lane to Suncliffe Drive and another crossing would be created at the junction of Newey Drive and Warwick Road.

This would also be on a road hump.

The feedback window closed at the end of September, and the county council is expected to make a decision in December.

Speaking at the most recent Kenilworth Town Council meeting, Cllr Richard Dickson provided an update.

"The likelihood is it will go to the portfolio holder for a decision on the second week of December," he said.

"The money is in place for the work.

"The engineers are going to propose a slight change in the location for the crossing across the road.

"But it will enable residents of the Pavilions who are taking children to St John's primary school to be able to safely cross the road.

"At the moment, they take their lives in their hands."

Cllr Dickson said just 18 responses were made to the consultation, with one objection and others "not wholly supportive".

The road has already seen the speed limit reduced from 50mph to 30mph and a number of speed bumps installed.

In 2022 Kenilworth Town Council backed plans to improve the estate's connection to the town, signing off on funding to reduce the speed limit along Warwick Road.

A feasibility study conducted at the time found there was £450,000 in section 106 funding - money from housing developers - at the county council "set aside for improving cycling provision in St John's".
