A 23-year-old man from Kenilworth has helped raise over £150,000 to help send his girlfriend back home to Peru after she was told she has just weeks to live.

Dylan Harris met his partner Alex Caycho (21) at Lancaster University where, in March 2023, Alex was told she had stage three pancreatic cancer.

Despite a year of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the cancer has spread throughout her body and now she has been given just weeks to live.

An international student from Peru, Alex said her final wish was to go back to South America to spend her final days with her family. But due to her condition, the only safe way for her to travel was by medical air ambulance, at enormous expense.

And in the space of just a week over £150,000 has been donated to the GoFundMe page, which was set up by Dylan and Alex's friends.

On the fundraising page, Alex wrote: "Despite all the treatments, the cancer has spread throughout my body.

"The tumour in my pancreas has grown so much that it's pressing against my intestines, causing internal bleeding.

"The doctors have explained that there's nothing more they can do—treatment is no longer an option. They've given me a timeframe of just days to weeks to live.

"This news has shattered me, and it's been a massive shock to my friends and family as well.

"I never imagined my life would end this way, so soon, with so much left undone. But now, more than anything, I want to spend my last days surrounded by the people I love, in the place that means the most to me—home.

"My last wish is to return to Peru, to be with my family in the place where I grew up, where I have so many happy memories. I can't imagine being anywhere else in these final days. But getting there isn't going to be easy.

"Due to my condition, the only safe way for me to travel is by private jet, with my doctors by my side to take care of me during the journey."

The incredible generosity by a huge number of donors meant that Alex was able to travel the 6,000 miles to reach Lima on Monday (September 2) alongside Dylan, her mother and even her cats!

The funding helped pay for the flight continuous medical supervision and vital equipment to allow Alex to fly.

The journey took 24 hours, with many stops for refuelling needed. And upon reaching the capital city, she was then transported to be with her family.

Following the huge amount of support from well-wishers, Dylan said to Nub News: "Alex and I are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support we've received in making Alex's return to Peru possible.

"Thanks to the outpouring of generosity, we were able to make this heartfelt wish a reality just yesterday.

"We are deeply moved by the kindness and compassion shown to us, and words can hardly express how much this means to us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all."

While Alex has now reached Peru, donations are still being received vie the GoFundMe page here.
