Power was restored to Kenilworth homes in the early hours of the morning after National Grid worked through the night to fix the problem.

Nearly 3,000 houses were without electricity from late yesterday afternoon (April 29).

National Grid had originally said it would restore power by 5pm, then adjusting this to 11pm.

Some 1,600 homes had power restored by early evening, leaving a further 1,100 without.

An update posted this morning at 4.03am said power had finally been restored.

While National Grid did not give an explanation, Kenilworth Fire Station said it had attended a fire at 3.11pm today which could leave residents without power.

A spokesperson said: "We have just returned from an underground electrical fire on Glasshouse Lane near the site of the new school.

"The fire involved a underground high voltage electricity cable. National Grid are on site and looking to rectify the problem. Nearby properties may be experiencing a power outage.

"Fire crews stood by whilst National Grid isolated the power to the cable and the sub station nearby."

"Unfortunately there are two faults on an underground cable which means engineers are unable to re-route the power to restore all supplies," a spokesperson said.

"As a result, engineers are in the process of installing emergency generators on to the relevant electrical substations and transformers to restore supplies."

National Grid also had to restore power to over 1,500 homes on Wednesday (April 26) following another power cut. It blamed the incident on a "high voltage failure".
