The Green group has announced its three candidates for the Kenilworth Wards at the upcoming Warwickshire County Council election.

The 2021 election will take place on May 6, having been deferred as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

On behalf of the Greens Tracey Drew will stand for Park Hill Ward, Wendy Edwards will run for St John's, and John Watson will be the candidate for Lapworth and West Kenilworth.

Kenilworth Park Hill

Having lived in the town for ten years, Ms Drew currently serves as a councillor on Kenilworth Town Council representing the Dalehouse Ward.

Speaking to Nub News she said: "I want to play an active role in the huge changes in housing we will have to cope with. I'm currently part of a group on the town council, planning how best to involve residents in deciding how community infrastructure levy monies from the developers are spent.

"I'm determined that residents are consulted on spending and ensuring that greater transparency is standard."

Ms Drew also highlighted the important transport issues that the town is faced with.

"On transport, achieving 20mph speed limits in suitable areas with appropriate traffic calming to make roads less hostile for children would be a strong focus for me.

"We are determined to stop the proposed A46 road and to preserve the last remaining strip of green belt between us and Coventry. We are continuing to collaborate with neighbouring communities effected by HS2 to mitigate the effects."

Kenilworth St John's

St John's candidate Wendy Edwards has lived in Kenilworth for over 30 years, spending her working life as a science teacher in further education in Coventry.

Speaking on why she loves Kenilworth Ms Edwards said: "I love that I am able to walk 15 minutes from home in one direction and be in the countryside or walk 15 minutes in another and be in the town."

As well as discussing local transport issues, she also highlighted the need to focus on problems facing local young people.

"As an ex-teacher, I am very concerned about education and engagement of young people. We need to make sure that the new school is built to high environmental standards and provides education fit for a rapidly changing world."

Lapworth and West Kenilworth

John Watson lives in Kenilworth with his four children, all of whom attend local schools. Having worked in automotive design for much of his career, Mr Watson now works a natural burial ground in Temple Balsall.

Asked why he will be contesting the Lapworth and West Kenilworth Ward he said: "I want to initiate change in our traffic and transport systems. I aim to scrutinise transport plans from a fresh and optimistic perspective.

"Our economy needs this kind of positive energy to invigorate a green recovery. We should not allow polluting industries to go back to doing what they think they know best, just because it's all that they know.

"We need a revolution in electric transport to clean up the roads that we already have and definitely not to carry on building more roads at the whim of the motor lobby."

Mr Watson added: "We should link up the whole county with an integrated train and cycle network, allowing people to enjoy a day out to explore their environment, breathing the clean Warwickshire air, then hopping onto a train home invigorated.

"Clean air, clean water, more nature, the ability and right to roam - and to enjoy our precious lives."
