An 87-year-old man killed his wife before setting himself on fire in their garden, an inquest has heard.

The bodies of Sewa Singh Badial and his wife Sukhjit, 73, were found at their Kenilworth Road home last June.

As reported by BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, Coventry coroner Delroy Henry recorded that Mr Badial unlawfully killed his wife before taking his own life.

Mr Badial attacked his wife with a machete, wounding her head, face, upper body and limbs.

He left a note saying he had hit her after a fight and that he would end his life for his family.

She died of head and facial injuries.

Police, who were called to the scene at 3pm on June 29 2021, found his body on a fire pit in the garden and then his wife's inside. Next to her was a garden machete and a wrench, which she was also hit with, the inquest heard.

He was caught on CCTV walking out of the house covered in blood before pouring petrol on himself and lighting it.

The coroner said he died from the effects of the fire.

The couple ran a clothes store in Handsworth, Birmingham.
