HS2 to give land back to local farmer
By James Smith 29th Jun 2026
A local farm is set to have some of its land returned, seven years after it was taken by HS2.
The high speed rail developer took four parcels of land at Burnt Heath Farm, Offchurch in November 2018.
But plans submitted to Warwick District Council show the land has never actually been used by HS2 and has sat untouched since then.
Contractors have now confirmed the land at Long Itchington Road and Welsh Road is no longer needed, and can be handed back to the landowner.
Photographs submitted to the council show the four pieces of land border the HS2 line and its works around Offchurch.
"Temporary possession of the four land parcels was taken by HS2 on 23 November 2018," a letter from HS2 said.
"Since that time, the land has remained unused and undisturbed, with no temporary work, construction storage or operational use having taken place."
It continued: "The four land parcels are no longer required as of 22 January 2026.
"As no actual restoration scheme has been deemed to be required by the landowner and there is agreement for the land parcels to be returned in their current condition, it is considered that the principles of the requirements of Schedule 16, Paragraph 5 of the HS2 Act have been adhered to."
HS2 has to agree with landowners and the local councils what works need to be done to restore the land it has taken - where possible - before it is handed back.
The council has agreed the four parcels of land in Offchurch can be returned back to the owner.
