Fire at Grade-II listed Warwickshire pub no longer being treated as arson

By James Smith 1st Mar 2022

Police have confirmed that a fire at a Grade II listed pub in Warwickshire was not arson, as originally suspected.

Six fire crews, including one from Kenilworth, battled the fire at the Stag's Head pub in Wellesbourne through the night on October 11 2021.

Nobody was injured but a 30-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of criminal damage - arson endangering life.

However, Warwickshire Police has today confirmed that it is no longer investigating the fire as arson.

A police statement said: "Following a full and thorough investigation between ourselves and Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service we can confirm the incident is no longer being treated as arson.

"We would like to thank the Wellesbourne community for their patience and co-operation while we carried out enquiries."

Having been called to the fire at 1.30am last October, crews remained at the scene all day to make sure it had been completely extinguished.

Local people raised over £6,500 for the owners after the fire completely destroyed the pub's thatched roof.

The pub remains closed whilst the rebuild continues.
