Councils formally ask Secretary of State for permission to create South Warwickshire District Council
A formal request has been sent to Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Michael Gove MP asking for permission to create a new South Warwickshire District Council.
The two councils must now wait for government approval before moving ahead with the plans.
But to mark the occasion of the submission group leaders from across the political spectrum gathered at the Longbridge Island, which borders both districts.
Leader of WDC Cllr Andrew Day said: "This historic decision demonstrates a strong cross-party commitment to a brighter future for local government in South Warwickshire.
"I'm proud of fellow councillors who have squarely addressed the challenge to create a modern, efficient and more resilient district council, better able to meet the pressing needs of our communities.
"Our residents and partners recognise that now is the time for change, and councillors are committed to continuing our work together to strengthen local democracy and renew services, should permission be granted by Mr Gove."
Kenilworth councillors were split along party lines at the vote, with the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats approving the plans, but Greens raising concerns about the lack of information provided by the council's cabinet.
However the merger was approved by 23 votes to 12 at WDC and by 26 to three in Stratford.
Should permission be granted by Mr Gove the two councils hope to complete the merger by April 2024.
